According to a police watchdog, in the last two years more than 1,000 Metropolitan police officers who have misused corporate credit cards will not been punished.
An internal audit that has been conducted by the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) has found that 1,183 officers had made purchases that has broken procurement rules. The employees have received "training and guidance", but they were not formally disciplined.
There are two categories in which the misuse of procurement cards fell
-
first one are the claims that should have gone through an alternative procurement process and
-
second one are the personal purchases that were repaid later.
the purchasing cards were issued to a total of 3,533 officers and staff and in October 2007, £3.7 million worth of transactions were unaccounted for. Most of this money, has since been paid back. Although it would have neither been confirmed by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and nor MPA how much.
In May last year the MPS American Express cards had been replaced with a Barclaycard system, which had tighter spending controls. “Extensive" staff training is also included in the service.
